The High Lonesome Ranch - Fly-Fishing

Everything your fly-fishing heart desires.

The High Lonesome Ranch

Most guests begin their trip on a variety of our Stillwater ponds. For many anglers, Stillwater fishing is a yawn, but not here. Our ponds are clear and shallow, with shoulder vegetation, blowdown and flats. The majority of your time is spent sight-casting to brookies, browns, rainbows, and cutbows. Streamers, nymphs, and dropper rigs are commonly used, but much of our fishing is with dry flies. There is nothing like casting a big Stimulator to a cruising trout, and getting a Grand Slam is icing on the cake.

Fish the moving water.

After a few days of sight fishing, many of our guests change gears to fish moving water. There are some rivers, such as the Crystal and the White, where we offer private-access fishing on freestone streams. While our ponds fish well all year long, the best time to fish the rivers and the streams is in the summer, from June through August. Runoff is over by then, and the hatches are epic.

The High Lonesome Ranch will be the 2010 host for a co-sponsored event. Wine on the Fly and Fly Rod and Reel Magazine present a unique fly-fishing and wine tasting event at The High Lonesome and K-T Ranches.

Join us from July 14-18, 2010 for three-days of prime-time fly-fishing and wine tasting. Fish and socialize with some of the best-known editors and writers in the industry as well as some of the premier vintners from the Napa and Sonoma Valleys.

Take a drift-boat trip with a shore-side lunch.

For a complete experience, our guides then move on to a drift-boat trip. Most of our trips are on either the Roaring Fork or the Colorado, and are run by our affiliates. Some of the drift trips are run in drift boats while others use self-bailing rafts. Shore-side lunches in the shade of a cottonwood grove break up the day.

Spring creek sight-casting for newsworthy browns and rainbows

And for you experts, why not add a spring creek sight-casting experience to the mix? At the The High Lonesome Ranch, K-T location, we’ve got two spring creeks that you can have all to yourself. The browns and rainbows are big enough to have been featured in Fly Rod and Reel magazine.

Finish off your week on one of our ponds, and get even with the 20+ inch trout that thumbed his nose at you earlier in the week.
